Commenting on the meeting Andrew Tyrie, MP for Chichester, said:
“Selsey is a great place. It has so much to offer but it’s still something of a secret. Selsey has been home to Britain’s best known astronomer, and I strongly support the initiative to build the Sir Patrick Moore Observatory. We have to find ways of telling more people about the seaside, the natural wildlife, the leisure centre, Selsey crab and lobster, and much else.”
“Most important of all, I’m going to keep fighting for improvements in the road network. People have got to be able to get past the A27 and down the B2145: not just the visitors, the residents too.”
Linda Frampton, the Chair of Team Selsey said:
“Team Selsey is delighted to announce that Andrew Tyrie MP has agreed to be our patron. This is crucial support at a critical time for the development of tourism within Selsey. Retailers and businesses everywhere are having a difficult time in the current economic conditions.
“The meeting on Friday 8th March generated a number of ideas and we are now looking at the best way to take projects and suggestions forward. Team Selsey now has a great team of people with a diverse range of skills representing a number of key aspects for Selsey. As a team we are excited about working together and helping to change the face of tourism and retail within Selsey”
On Friday 8th March, Andrew Tyrie, MP for Chichester, met with members of Selsey Town Team to discuss how to help regenerate the town centre, and attract new visitors. At the meeting, Mr Tyrie agreed to become a patron of the Town Team.
Team Selsey has identified a number of new opportunities to reinvigorate the town by: supporting the initiative to build the Sir Patrick Moore Observatory; attracting new visitors to see the wildlife and natural heritage through increased publicity; encouraging new market traders by extending the street market; allowing pop-up shops in empty properties to showcase new ideas; and creating an online information centre with social media.
Team Selsey is made up of representatives from a range of different sectors, including retailing, property and tourism. The central aim of the Town Team is to revitalise Selsey by supporting the development of a broad mix of retail, community and leisure uses in order to reignite pride in the town.
Background
In September, the Selsey Town Team, led by Linda Frampton, successfully registered to become a ‘Town Team Partner’. In becoming a Partner, Selsey will receive £10,000 to help put their plans into action.
The Team will now be able to draw upon: a network of advisers managed by the Association of Town Centre Management; direct mentoring from a range of retail experts; and regular meetings with other Town Teams to share ideas.
Town Team Partners needed to have the commitment of their local MP in order to access this package of support. Andrew Tyrie therefore wrote to Mark Prisk, the Local Growth Minister, showing his support for the application.
